Q: How long before you can drive on new asphalt?

New asphalt typically needs 24 to 48 hours before light vehicle traffic is recommended. In warmer temperatures, it may take slightly longer for the asphalt to fully harden, so avoiding heavy vehicles and sharp turns during the first few days is important.

Q: What is asphalt resurfacing?

Asphalt resurfacing, often called an overlay , involves placing a new layer of asphalt over existing pavement. This is a cost-effective solution when the base of the pavement is still structurally sound but the surface has cracks or wear.

Q: What causes cracks and potholes in asphalt?

Cracks and potholes are usually caused by water infiltration, freeze-thaw cycles, heavy traffic, and natural aging of asphalt surfaces . When water enters cracks and freezes during winter, it expands and causes the pavement to break apart.

Q: Is asphalt cheaper than concrete for driveways?

Yes. Asphalt is typically more affordable than concrete for driveway and parking lot installation. Asphalt is also faster to install and easier to repair, which makes it a popular choice for both residential and commercial paving projects.

Q: How thick should asphalt be for a driveway?

A residential driveway is usually installed with 2–3 inches of asphalt over a properly prepared stone base . Commercial parking lots often require thicker asphalt layers depending on expected traffic and load requirements.

Accepted Answer

Most asphalt driveways and parking lots should be sealcoated every 2–3 years to protect the pavement from UV exposure, water penetration, oil spills, and the freeze-thaw cycles common in Western New York.

For newly paved asphalt, Everblak Paving typically recommends applying the first sealcoat the spring after installation. After that, sealcoating may be recommended every year for the first three years, followed by every other year depending on traffic and pavement condition.
